MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FRIDAY (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) REMANDED Thomas Patrick Rouse, a painter, aged 36, was charged with failing to pay arrears of maintenance. . „ . Sub-Inspector G. J. Paine said that Rouse had paid only £6 since the order was.made, arrears amounting to £863 17s. A remand to July 22 was granted.

THEFT OF BICYCLE William Davey, a labourer, aged 32, was charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £lO 10s, the property of Lawrence Louis Andrew Dawe. The bicycle had been stolen from outside the complainant’s shop, and later the defendant had been seen wheeling it, said Sub-Inspector Paine. He had stated that he had found it in a lane off Colombo street. He was not unknown to the police, and had been up for the same type of offence before. , . .. , Accused was sentenced to three months imprisonment. .

TRAFFIC CASES Offenders against the traffic regulations were dealt with as follows in cases brought by the police:— No warrant of fitness: David J. R. Cooke, 10s; Montague Anthony Jackson, 20s (no driver’s licence 20s). Crossing railway line when it was not clear: Berend Hendrik Sluis, £3. Cycling at night without a light: Alfred Clarence I. Taylor. 20s. CIVIL COURT THURSDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil cases;—The Colonial Oil Refining Company, Ltd., v. D. Donaldson, £26 17s 6d; W. C. Keenan v Clarence Arneson, £2 4s lOd; the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., v. R. Borthwick. 18s 2d; Trist and Small, Ltd., v. M. J. Hasler. £5 3s 6d; Arthur John O’Neil v. William Streeter, £5 3s; Charles Williams v. William McCausland, £lB 10s. JUDGMENT SUMMONS On a judgment summons, J. Payne was ordered to pay the Drapery and General Importing Company, Ltd., £ll 3s 9a forthwith, in default 12 days’ imprisonment, I the warrant to be suspended as long as ' defendant pays 20s a week.
