HEADMASTER TO RETIRE

MR H. B. LUSK, OF KING’S COLLEGE “ The Press ” Special Service AUCKLAND, June 3. The announcement that he would be retiring at the end of this year was made by Mr H. B. Lusk, headmaster of King’s College, during this week-end’s celebration by the King’s College Old Boys’ Association of the school’s 50th anniversary. His statement came as a surprise, and was received with expressions of regret by speakers at the reunion gatherings. Mr Lusk is now in his 52nd year as a teacher. For 27 years he has been a master at King’s College, and for the last four he has been headmaster. Born in Auckland in 1877, Mr Lusk was educated at Sydney High School, Sydney Church of Englsnd Grammar School and Auckland University College. In his younger days he won distinction throughout New Zealand, not only as a scholar, but also as a front-rank cricketer and golfer. His teaching work began under the Auckland Education Board, and later he was for about 14 years on the staff of Christ’s College, including two years on exchange at Rugby. In 1920 Mr Lusk came to King’s College, which was then at Remuera under the headmastership of the late Mr C. T. Major. He assumed charge of the School House, of which he has been master ever since. On the retirement of Mr J. U. Collyns about 12 years ago he became first assistant. Mr Lusk was inducted as headmaster of King’s College in February, 1943, in succession to the late LieutenantColonel J. N. Peart, D. 5.0., who died of wounds in the Middle East the previous September.
