FIRES IN CATCHMENT BOARD AREAS
“It is no use trying to stop fires in the summer unless precautions have been taken in the winter to have clean ureng adjoining fire risks,” Mr C. E. Kidson (Nelson) told members of the New Zealand catchment boards’ conference yesterday. He said that the Nelson district was a good example of firrv» fighting precautions proving successful Both the Nelson City Council and the State Forest Service had very big reserves, and although the N*Jsnn area was a bad one for fires last Kummer, neither body had lost a single tree. Dr. George Jobberns (Canterbury) paid that apart from fire risk from the West Coast trains in summer (which last year had caused much trouble) an efficient organisation (organised by the Canterbury Progress League) existed In Canterbury and the situation was well in hand. Both speakers were commenting on a brief report by Mr A. P. Grant, engineer to the Soil Conservation and River Control Council, urging all boards to set up fire-fighting organisations.
