LEGISLATURE FOR BURMA
BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S PLAN LONDON, May 21. Moving the second reading of the Burma Legislature Bill, the Post-master-General (Lord Listowel) said that the measure aimed at making Burma as free in the management of its own affairs as any self-governing Dominion. The British Government was anxious that a general election should be held as soon as possible, and hoped that the legislature would be formed before June. 1947. The most striking feature of the bill was the widening of the franchise with a vote at 21 vears of age and equality for women, thereby nearly trebling the electorate from 2,500,000 to 8,500,000 people.
