WATERSIDERS ON STRIKE
Dispute In Sydney Spreads
HANDLING OF WOOL BALES (Special Australian Corresp.. NJS.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 7. More than 1600 watersiders to-day refused to accept work because of the dispute concerning double dumped wool, as a result of which more than 100 watersiders were dismissed yesterday. To-day the men said they would refuse work unless the men involved in the refusal to handle wool were put on a roster for other jobs. Of 16 ships affected, seven are entirely without labour. The dispute has extended to Newcastle, where the men have refused to load double dumped wool into the Alleghany Victory. At Newcastle more than 200,000 double dumped bales are held in storage. The Stevedoring Industry Commission, on which the Waterside Workers’ Federation has representation, decided on Friday that the handling of double dumped wool would continue. The watersiders want a definite date fixed for the abandonment of double dumping. If the dispute is prolonged general immobilisation of shipping is inevitable.
