STUDENTS’ CAPPING PROCESSION
TOPICAL SUBJECTS ON DECORATED FLOATS Men students of Canterbury University College had their annual day out yesterday, when they paraded through the streets of Christchurch and held a mock investiture in Cathedral square. There was a large crowd to watch the performance. The students had a wealth of material from which to get ideas for their decorated floats. Such topical subjects as family allowances, shortages of tobacco and matches, housing problems, and pole sitting were the basis for displays. Nevertheless, the execution of the ideas was not as good as the selection.
However, there was no doubting the enthusiasm of the young men ana the high spirits with which they entered into the fun. Many spectators found this infectious.
The highlights were the antics of the eight-legged dinosaur and the speech of the “Governor-General” at the investiture The dinosaur was a great success in chasing its tail round a lamp post in Cathedral square and in reclining comfortably on a hotel balcony during the investiture. The “Governor-General” explained his presence by a difference of opinion with the wharf lords, but expressed confidence that he would be able to get to Britain disguised as a Rolls Royce. A collection was taken up for the International Students’ Service for student relief.
