BASES IN AZORES
NEGOTIATIONS WITH PORTUGAL
NEW YORK, May 5. Britain and America have entered into formal negotiations with Portugal for the continuous use of the air and naval bases in the Azores as part of the network for Atlantic defence, states the Washington correspondent of the “New York Times.”
Talks are in progress directly with Portuguese representatives, but the intention evidently is that any defence agreement reached will be made part of a much wider defence system under the United Nations. Portugal is not a member of the United Nations, but it is hoped that she will eventually join and negotiate with the Security Council on the arrangements under which Portuguese facilities may be placed at the disposal of the United Nations and the Military Staff Committee.
Gina Mussolini, widow of Bruno Mussolini, the Duce’s son, is reported to be one of five occupants of a British motor-boat which was sunk on Lake Como. The others are said to be a British major, who reached the shore alone, a captain, and two women.—Milan, May 5.
