AUTUMN MEETING AT ASHBURTON

RACING

SIGNAL OFFICER HAS EASY WIN FAST TIMES - RECORDED The Ashburton . County Racing Club’s autumn meeting was held at Ashburton on Saturday in fine weather, before a fair attendance. Considering the attendance, the totalisator turnover of £33,137 was exceedingly good and represented an increase of £2686 10s on last year’s total -of £30,268 10s. The track was in excellent order ahd some fast times were recorded. The three-year-old filly Sanskrit put up an outstanding performance when she won the Eiffelton Hack Handicap of six furlongs in Imin 11 sec, a time that is seldom beaten by hacks on any metropolitan course. Test Pilot’s time of 3min lOsec in the mile and three-quarters Longbeach Hurdles Handicap was only one second outside Survey’s record for the distance, and considering that his rider, I. Walther, rode the last five furlongs of the race without the use of his irons through the saddle tree breaking the time was exceptional. The heavily supported favourite, Signal Officer made short work of the opposition in the Ashburton Handicap once the held started the riih home, and easily beat Amorlad, which put more heart itito his work than he did at Riccarton, by two lengths. Foxhaven did not make much impression on the leaders until the last furlong, and just headed off Honest Sal for third money, the pair being two lengths behind Amorlad. A. disappointing field of five runners only took part in the Flying Handicap, but they provided a better race than ex- • pec ted. Rather surprisingly Whitley was slow away, and he did not reach the front until slightly more than two furlongs had been covered, and then did not put his customary large break bn the field. He was just over a length clear of Montezuma, Atreus, and Grand Forest at the straight entrance, and held his lead in the straight to win easily by three lengths from Montezuma, Which made a creditable showing for her first race since early in January. Grand Forest, which was slow away, and Atreus, had every chance. Details LONGBEACH HURDLE HANDICAP, of f 250; ohe mile and three-quarters.—l, 1 H. Grigg’s TEST PILOT by Sky Pilot 6yrs 10-4 I.
