FORBURY PARK CLUB

TROTTING

LOU HALL WINS JAMES MEMORIAL HANDICAP From Our Own Reporter • DUNEDIN, May 5. Kerrwood Bingen's win in the Railway Handicap was one of the highlights of the concluding day of the Forbury Park TFotting Club’s winter meeting yesterday. Driven by his trainer, J. Wallis, the aged son of Great Bingen began smartly, butwent to a break when attempting to race in the lead with Flying Scott and dropped back. In the middle stages he was giving the leaders a long start, but Wallis kept him up to his work and with five furlongs to go was flicking him with the whip. Kerrwood Bingen gradually reduced the gap and he caught Mamanuas with about 50 yards to go, and went on to win by a neck from Nationalist, which finished fast over the last half-mile, with Mamanuas another head away in third place. Kerrwood Bingen broke a trace and one of his knee-boots slipped during the running, but he triumphed over these handicaps, and his win was popularly received by the large crowd. Lou Hall deserved her win in ’he James Memorial Handicap, the main event, as she led all the way, but her task would have been much harder if O. E. Hooper had been able to get a clear run with Radical over the last three furlongs. At this stage, Radical was trailing his stablemate Elvo’s Pride, which was following the leader, Lou Hall, and it was not until approaching the straight that he was able to get a run on the rails. By this time, Lou Hall had a three-lengths break on Radical, and although he finished resolutely, he failed to catch her by half a head. Rain on Friday made the track very heavy, but fortunately Saturday was fine, and the attendance was not seriously affected. An idea of the state of the track can be gained by a comparison of the times registered on each day of the meeting. On the first day Radical won the 4m in 34sec Ritchie Memorial Handicap in 4min 27sec, while on Saturday, Lou Hall was successful in the same class race in smin lOsec.

The totalisator investments were £61,475 10s, compared with £27,386 10s invested on the second day of the winter meeting in 1941, which was the last winter meeting held by the club. The aggregate for the two days was £117,518 10s, compared with £57,289 for the 1941 meeting. Results:— TAHUNA HANDICAP, of £250; (trotters); 3min 43sec class; one mile and a half.—3, 5 F. J.
