LAWN TENNIS
EASTER TOURNAMENT COMPLETED
The remaining events in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s Easter open and handicap tournament, postponed three times since Easter because of rain, were completed in ideal weather on Saturday morning. The women’s open doubles was won by the Misses I. and P. Kitson, who at Easter won the New Zealand University women’s doubles title for the second year in succession. Although Miss I. Kitson played too much from the baseline, they were steadier than their opponents, Misses J. Mac Gibbon ana W. Morgan. For a junior, the last-mentioned did well, but her failure to get close enough to the net in volleying was a positional weakness of which the Kitson sisters, who concentrated their attack on her, took full advantage. Both the open and handicap doubles events went to N. Brydges-Jones and Miss V, Rollitt, who were on a difficult mark in the latter event. They were very steady and covered court well. The run-ners-up in the open event, M. E. Chapple (still a junior) and Mrs U. Rogers, played some good shots, but were not sufficiently consistent. Results:— WOMEN’S OPEN DOUBLES Final.—Misses I. and P. Kitson beat Misses J' Mac Gibbon and W. Morgan, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
MIXED OPEN DOUBLES = Brydges-Jones and Miss V. Rollitt beat M. E. Chapple and Mrs U. Rogers, 6-4, 6-1.
MIXED HANDICAP DOUBLES . Semi-final. —N. Brydges-Jones and Miss V. Rollitt (owe 30 2-6) beat S. E. Nicol and Mrs O. M. Nicol (owe 15), 9-2. Final.—Brydges-Jones and Miss Rollitt beat P. F. Maples and Miss J. Woodward (rec. % 15), 9-2.
