PHENOMENA FROM SUNSPOTS
ACTIVITY EXPECTED THIS WEEK (P.A.) WELLINGTON. May 4. Developments on the sun are leading the Carter Observatory to expect at or after the week-end aurora end other phenomena on the earth that are usually associated with sunspots. Some spots have developed very rapidly, though they are still barely visible without the aid of an instrument. The director of the observatory (Mr I. L. Thomsen) stated yesterday that what had been a very “ spots on Wednesday had on ’Htursday developed into a spot about 36,000 miles long, and it appeared to be developing still further. Another very small spot had developed. If the spots continued to develop and became of considerable size, activity on the earth could be expected about Monday. It seemed that quickly-growing spots affected the earth most and that the single-spot type ot acUvity caused stronger effects than .the double-spot type The disturbance caused by the spot was most noticeable when it was past the centre of the disc. The spot* he was referring to were very near the centre.
