HOCKEY

SATURDAY’S MATCHES

TWO DRAWN GAMES With improved grounds the hockey provided in all senior games on Saturday was of a very high standard, and there were some excellent exhibitions of stick play and short passing. Following are the results:—

TECHNICAL V. TRINITY The Trinity forwards were disorganised by the absence of Thomas and Glentworth, but Technical played an outstanding game throughout. Most prominent was the work of the goalkeeper, A. G. Brown, who gave a brilliant exhibition and on one occasion stopped four shots in as many seconds. Both backs. A. Bailey and M. Elliott, worked hard and got through a heavy day very creditably. N. Pullan, at centre-half, intercepted the Trinity forwards well. W. Cole gave a clever display at centre-forward. The most outstanding of the Trinity team was R. Parrott, who used his long reach to great advantage. E. Raddicliffe, in the halves, while never spectacular, played a heady and clever game, intercepting well and feeding his forwards with cool judgment. Technical was the first to score when Cole netted with a great shot. Both teams battled hard and Wales equalised before half-time. Trinity secured the lead when Wales scored from a penalty corner, but Dale sent in a hot one for Technical to make the final score: Technical 2, Trinity ... Umpires: Messrs P. Cornish and E. Fox. ~*iS>ENHAM A v. SYDENHAM B •Hie tW Sydenham teams met in the biggest scoring match of the day. The B teem, which is comprised of young playets men, put up a stubborn, fight-against their more experienced club '■■mates’. - Neate opened the score for the H?teani 10 minutes after the opening bully, buW. Smith equalised a few minutes later* . Malone put the B team ahead but Calvert registered two goals in quick succession; for the A team, and the halftime score was A team 3, B team 2. Hardie evened the scores shortly after the resumption. Cumnlins, who was playing a- brilliant game on the wing, and Randan, sdQfed for the A's, and Malone again netted for the B team. In the closing stages I. Smith registered the sixth , goal for A team. The final score was? A team 6, B team 4. Umpires: Messrs W. Perry and W. H. Down.

MARATHON v. UNIVERSITY Marathon’s speedy forwards gave the University backs a busy time and held the game to a draw by fast, bustling play. University opened the score when Eggleton found the net with a lightning shot and registered a second goal, by fast following in. University had the better of the game for a spell and Johnston added a third foal. Marathon settled down and Deakin nd Ayson were associated in a move which gave Ayson a chance, and later Ayson again found the net. The half-time score was: University 3, Marathon 2. Early in the second spell Ayson registered his third goal and evened the scores, but Mann put University in the lead piidway through the spell. The game went from end to end, and in the final stages Deakin netted for Marathon and the game ended in a draw. The final score was: Marathon 4, University 4. Umpires: Messrs H. W. Gourlay and C. A. Rogets. RED CLIEFS v. SELWYN .

Selwyn played with better combination, passing, and stick play, to beat Redcliffs by 5 goals to 1. The Redcliffs backs and halves made the mistake of hitting too hard, and their forward passes were erratic. In goal, Bremner played a great game, using his feet well to clear the ball. The Selwyn forwards combined well and J. Reece gave a brilliant exhibition of ball control ancPmick play. The game opened very evenly and neither side gained any great advantage for a while. A penalty bully gave Selwyn the first goal. Dale equalised after he and Barton had participated in a passing run. Moore put Selwyn in the lead and the half-time score was Selwyn 2. Redcliffs 1. CleVer forward play by Reece and McOscar gave McOscar two chances early in the second half, and Reece added a fifth goal by following in smartly to net after a rebound off the Redcliffs goalie’s pads. The final score was: Selwyn 5. Redcliffs 1. Umpires: Messrs E. Fox and C. C.
