KING’S FILLY WINS ONE THOUSAND GUINEA*

The King's horse, HyWricum, la winning the One Thousand Guineas at Newmarket. provided one of the greateat sensations in the history of the English turf. Hypericum swerved as the horses were walking to the tapes, threw her jockey (Douglas Smith), bolted three-quarters of a mile round the course, which she left {ind made towards Newmarket town. As Hypericum was none the worse for her escapade, it was decided to allow her to start. She again swerved when the barrier, rose, but she soon settled down. Thei’e was terrific cheering from the large crowd when it was seen that she was gaining under the jockey’s pressure. She passed the favourite Nflolight in the straight and went on to a comparatively easy victory. - Princess Elizabeth saw the race. Hypericum was bred by His Majesty' and is a bay filly by Hyperion from Feola by Friar Marcus from Aloe, tne latter a sister'to Foxlaw. a winner of the Ascot Sold Cup and sire of the leading New ealand sire Foxbridge. Hypericum was rated one of the best of the two-year-old fillies at the close of last season, and was one of the winter favourites for the classics. Her dam, Feola, was bred by King George V, but on his death she was raced in Lord Derby’s name. She finished second in the One Thousand Guineas in 1936, and third in the Oaks. She has previously bred the winners Foretaste, Knight's Daughter, and Kingstone, the latter a good staying colt that won four good class staying handicap last season. This is the third classic winner King George VI has raced, the other two being Big Game and Sun Chariot, but Hypericum is the first classic winner to be bred at the Royal Stud since Scuttle, which won the One Thousand Guineas in 1928.
