ENGINEER APPOINTED Mr James S. Houston, 8.E.. AJdJ.CJL, MJI.SJ., A.N.Z.1.E., A.MJ.E. (Australia), has been appointed borough engineer of Lyttelton. Mr Houston has served on the staff of the Timaru Borough Council, Dunedin City Council, Public Works Department at Christchurch and Wellington, and is at present employed by the Hydro Electric Commission at Hobart, Tasmania. Mr Houston is a chartered engineer, London, Chartered Engineer. Australia. 2nd registered civil engineer. New Zealand. It is expected that he will be able to take up his duties about the middle of June. Seamen Charged Sidney Chiplin, a seaman, was charged in the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, before Messrs W. TLester, J.P., and T. A. Mahar, J J*., with absenting himself without leave from the ship Fort Sakisdac. On the application of the police he was remanded to appear nt Christchurch on Tuesday. Alfred Willis, a ship’s greaser, aged 22 years, was charged with deserting from the motor-ship Brisbane Star at Lyttelton on April 30. He was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment.
