The Minister of Works (the Hon. R. Semple) arrived in Christchurch yes* terday. He will officially open the new Kaiapoi bridge this morning, and on Monday will open the new goods shed at the Christchurch railway station. Mr Semple will visit Central Otago later next week. Sir Francis Frazer concluded a sitting as Transport Appeal Authority yesterday. He commenced the hearing of Bureau of Industry appeals as Industrial Appeal Authority yesterday | afternoon. He will return north on [ Monday evening. Mr M. Moohan, secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, arrived in Christchurch yesterday by air from Wellington. He will return to Wellington this morning. Appreciation of the services given to the Christchurch Technical College by Mr G. Maxwell Keys during the last 18 years was expressed last evening by the Board of Governors of the .college. Mr Keys is leaving the evening school staff to devote all his time to the Vocational Guidance centre. Paying a tribute to Mr Keys, Dr. D. E. Hansen said Mr Keys was one of the founders of vocational guidance in New Zealand. It was decided to place Mr Keys’s photograph in the memorial hall.

Tributes to the work of Mr J. J. Staples, who recently retired from the position of advertising manager of the “Star-Sun," were paid at a function in his honour recently. Mr Staples had been associated with various newspapers for 52 years as a compositor, reporter, agricultural writer, ownereditor, and advertising manager. On behalf of the staff, the manager (Mr Alexander Scott) presented Mr Staples with a set of bowls, and wished him a happy retirement.

The death occurred suddenly in London on April 19 of Lieutenant-Com-mander (S) Alan Charles Baume, V.D., R.A.N.V.R. (retired). Second son of the late Hon. F. E. Baume, K.C., M.P., LL.B., of Auckland. Lieutehant-Com-mander Baume was 42 years of age. Before going to Australia he served on the literary staffs of Christchurch and Dunedin newspapers.
