REFERENCE
JUVENILE OFFENDER Miss Eileen Philipp’s Juvenile Delinquency in New Zealand (New Zealand Council for Educational Research. 140 pp.) is described as a “preliminary study.” The author found, for instance, that information available in coprt reports and personal files is inadequate, terms used not being clearly defined and information not being regularly furnished under the relevant heads. Suggestions for improved practice in this field are among other useful ones in a methodical piece of work. BOTANY The head of the Department of Botany, Victoria University College, Dr. I. V. Newman, has based his book, The Living Plant (A. H. and A. W. Reed. 128 pp.) on the notes used in his flrst-year laboratory, amplifying them to serve the needs of class teachers better, and those, also, of “the solitary student.” RECONSTRUCTION
Two new pamphlets in the Looking Forward series issued by the Royal Institute of International Affairs are Science and the Social Order (by Cecil H. Desch. F.R.S.) and International Trade (by G. A. Duncan).
