CATHEDRAL ORGAN RECITAL

FINE PLAYING BY BERNARD PAGE Mr Bernard Page, examiner fer Trinity College, gave his second recital in the Cathedral recently. Fof variety of interest, contrast of mood and colour, and .maintenance of the highest musical standard, this programme would be hard to surpass. It is rare to find such nice discrimination in choice of items. The programme Opened quietly with a Pastorale by Scarlatti—not pn original organ composition, but one which, transcribed for the instrument, and registered as it was, made a fitting and pleasing introduction to what was to follow. The Each Fantasia fa Q major was played in a brilliant style in the bravura passages, and the dignity at the massive five-part middle section suited both the building and the atmosphere of the programme. Miss Gladys. Vincent, violinist, played two works with Mr Page. The first, Handel's Sonata in B major, showed hpw well the violin could sound with the organ and roused much expgctfincy for the Andante from Elgar’s violin Concerto, which came later, This work was superbly played by both performers. Miss Vincent's interpretation of this very lovely work, together with her yery beautiful tone, showed musicianship of a high order, and Mr Page used the wide resources of the organ in true orchestra! style. Two numbers by Karg Elert, the Pax, Vobiscum and the Sonatina in A minor and Cesar Franck's mystical Prayer in C Sharp minor completed a programme which will long ae remembered by those who heard it.
