OBITUARY
MR A. QUIGLEY A resident of the Ellesmere district for 66 years and a man who was held in high regard, Mr Andrew Quigley, a prominent Doyleston farmer died recently at the age of 79 years Born in County Derry, Ireland, he arrived in New Zealand in 1880, his first home in this country being at Lakeside. As a youth of 16 he drew a section at Whakatane. Bay of Plenty, but decided to abandon .he idea of settling there and returned to the South Island. taking up land at Motukarara. A few years later he moved to Irwell, and then to the property at Doyleston which he farmed for the last 40 years.
Apart from his activities as a farmer. Mr Quigley served the community for 18 vears as a member of the Ellesmere County Council. One of the foundation shareholders of the Canterbury Central Co-operative Dairy Company, he served on the directorate of that company for 20 years. A keen volunteer as a young man. he was a member of the old Ellesmere Mounted Rifles, and for many years was a member of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr Quigley took an interest in various branches of sport, particularly trotting. He was a member of the now defunct Ellesmere Trotting Club and bred and raced several good horses in association with Mr Free. Holmes. amon r the best known being Vanity. Golden Marv. Overrate. George Rey. and Norval King. Mr Quigley married Miss Ellen Jane McConkey a member of a pioneer family in the district, who died 40 vears ago. Of a family of five three sons. John Andrew and James, survive. Two daughters. Miss Quiglev and Mrs B Maw (Methven), died some years ago.
