WHEELBARROW JOURNEY FOR WAGER
Wheeling a pneumatic-tyred barrow containing a man weighing 17 stone 61b, and lead discs weighing 81b. from the city to Hornby on Saturday, Mr L. G. Lukey won £lO for the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre. Mr J. L. Purdon, of Islington, had stated that he would give £lO to the centre if Mr Lukey could do the journey in 1 hour 50 minutes, and Mr Lukey agreed to pay the same amount if he failed. Assisted by a canvas harness over his shoulders to take some of the weight off his hands, and an alarm clock to assist his judgment of pace, Mr Lukey did the journey with 20 minutes to spare.
