CURRENT NOTES

Mrs H. A. Nutt and Mrs I. L. M. Coop will leave to-night for Wellington tc attend meetings of the advisory board and the Dominion executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs L. I. Cattell presided’ at a recent meeting of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club, when the speaker, Mrs A. Schumacher, gave an interesting talk on “Women in Public Life.” The guest speaker, Mrs E. M. Truman, gave an informative talk on “Life in Zanzibar.” Musical items were given by Miss V. Martin, accompanied by Mrs C. Shaw. The hostesses were Misses A. Richardson, M. Lance, and H. Kilgour. References to the valuable work done by the late Mrs C. W. Barrell were made at a recent meeting of the Christchurch Business and. Professional Women’s Club. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to her memory.

Two names of interest to New Zealanders figure in the list of promotions sanctioned by the King in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. They are Lady (Barbara) Frey berg, wife of Sir Bernard Freyberg, and Lady (Ann) Elliott, of Wellington. They have been Jromoted Dames of the Order of St. ohn.

Miss J. A S. Allan was on Thursday appointed personnel officer for the general female staff at all the Auckland Hospital Board’s institutions, at a salary of £450 per annum. This appointment is one of the board’s major steps in trying to improve the serious position with regard to female staffing at its hospitals. Miss Allan is 31 years of age, graduated Bachelor of Arts, and has fjad experience as personnel manager to an industrial firm.

Leaving for England soon is Miss W. Gordon, now on the staff of Wellington Girls’ College. She has been history mistress at the college for 13 years, and now intends to study education methods in England and in Europe. Miss Gordon is well known in musical circles in Wellington, for she has played the viola in several Wellington orchestras, as well as playing in the girls’ college orchestra for many years.

First Officer Elizabeth Archdale, W.R.N.S.. has been appointed principal of the Women’s College. University of Sydney. First Officer Archdale will take up her appointment at the Women’s College as soon as she is released by the Admiralty. She is now serving in Sydney with the British Pacific Fleet. She succeeds Miss Julie Fitzhardinge, who was appointed acting principal in 1944 and principal in 1945, when the Hon. Camilla Wedgwood resigned. After having graduated in arts from McGill University Canada, with first-class honours in economics and political science. First Officer Archdale graduated Master of Laws from London University. She was called to the Bar in London in 1937. and was practising when the war broke out. She joined the W.R.N.S. in 1940: Australians remember her as the cantain of the first English women’s cricket team to visit Australia in 1934-35.
