FRIDAY (Before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M.) ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE Francis Noel Harkness, a naval rating, was remanded until March 8 when he appeared again on a charge of attempting to murder Joyce Allison Harkness. Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said that the woman was now off the dangerously ill list and that her condition was improving. IMPRISONMENT FOR THEFT George Frederick Kane, of Burnham Military Camp, a boot finisher, aged 22, appeared for sentence on charges that on January 18, at Burnham, he stole the sum of £6, the property of Arthur Geddes Campbell; that on May 5 at Christchurch, he stole £1 2s 6d and a leather purse valued at 2s 6d, the property of Wilfred David King; and that on May 20, at Burnham, he stole the sum of £2 10s, the property of William Keay. The accused had abused the trust placed on him by his mates, said the Magistrate, sentencing Kane to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour on the third charge. On the other two charges, Kane • was convicted and discharged.

(Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) SENTENCED TO PRISON Bernard Victor Cottier, a waiter, aged 52, pleaded guilty to a charge of being, without lawful excuse, in a yard at 158 Fitzgerald avenue. Sub-Inspector G. J. Paine stated that Cottier had been convicted on a number of previous occasions for similar offences. Cottier stated that he had gone into the yard to drink a bottle of beer.
