A louse-infested dhow, which berthed st Mombasa after a voyage from Arabia, during which her pasgen? gers died or were exhausted from a relapsing fever carried by lice, started an epidemic in East Africa which cpst 400 lives. Medieal authorities in Mombasa took the most stringent preeau? tions but the lice got ashore and spread like a bushfire into coastal natives’ reserves and travelled north into Somaliland and south to Tanganyika. Military authorities made cvailable eight tons of DDT, delousing centres were established, and travelling antilouse squads were formed. Emergency hospitals and control centres dealt with thousands of fever patients but 4QO deaths occurred before the outbreak was controlled.
