INDIA

Sir,—The centure motion passed by the Trades Council regarding India is right only so far as it expresses sympathy for the national aspirations of the people of India. For the rest, it shows only a profound misunderstanding of the problems, long term and immediate, confronting that country. Having some personal knowledge of the situation, I would unhesitatingly say that the worst disaster that could befall the mass of the Indian people to-day would be for Britain to “walk out.” The resultant chaos, anarchy, civil and religious strife, coupled with the famine which must inevitably follow the failure of the monsoon 1 rains, are too tragic to contemplate. I regret that space does not permit detailed argument.—Yours, etc., G. T. MOUNCER. Lyttelton, February 27, 1946.
