Bevin Gravely Warns UNO Assembly
“TERRIFIC DEFICIT IN TOTAL SUPPLIES”
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, February 13. The British Foreign Secretary (Mr Bevin) was the first speaker in the UNO General Assembly’s debate on the food shortage when the Big Five’s resolution urging measures to avert famine came up for appoval. Mr Bevin referred to Mr Fraser’s recent statement that the food position was now worse than was originally thought. Mr Bevin said: “In November, 1945, when the food and agricultural organisation held its first meeting in Quebec, papers were presented showing that there was likely to be a world shortage of cereals. This was followed by further examination in Washington, and the latest figures rather show a worse position than was anticipated. I don’t exaggerate when I say that the food position is really alarming.
