DUTCH GEOLOGIST ON VISIT TO N.Z.
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 14. One of the foremost geologists in the Netherlands East Indies before the war, Dr. J. A. Baak, accompanied by his wife and young son, has arrived at Auckland on the Dutch hospital ship Tasman. Born in Holland and educated at the ancient university of Leyden, Dr. Baak was formerly attached to . the Soil Institute at Buitenzorg, Java, and was engaged in research on soil conservation and erosion.
During his stay in New Zealand he will study modern advances in agrogeology and geological survey. For a year and a half during the war Dr. Baak was forced to work for the Japanese and was made to study Japanese soil. At one time during his captivity he became so desperate for food that he sold the gold fillings from his teeth. Dr. Baak, who is on his way to Wellington, intends to return in the near future to continue his studies on Javanese soil, erosion, and afforestation.
