ST. JAMES
“THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT”
“The Horn Blows at Midnight” which opens at the St. James’ Theatre to-day, is a comedy starring Jack Benny and Alexis Smith. Benny, according to the script, is an angel who has lost his way on earth and is trying to earn some honest money by playing for those keen on “jitterbugs.” After some of his efforts though, the dancers become annoyed and Benny is picked up and thrown on to the dance floor. As usual, Alexis Smith plays her role admirably and the pair are supported by Dolores Moran, Allyn Joslyn, Reginald Gardiner, and Guy Kibbee. The second feature, “Thumbs Up,” portrays Brenda Joyce in the role of an American singer trying to make good on the stage in London in war time. She takes work in an aircraft factory to further her stage ambitions but a spiteful fellow-worker exposes her war-effort pose. She redeems herself, however, in a dramatic climax, and wins the love of a young Royal Air Force officer. Other players featured are Richard Fraser, Elsa Lancaster, and Arthur Margetson.
