SECONDARY SCHOOL BARRACKS

Sir;—l think 1 voice the protest of most parents when I complain of the absurd caps which school cadets ate forced to wear when drilling in the hot sun. A few days ago my boy came home with a badly burnt face and very sore eyes, requiring medical attention. If it is necessary, which I doubt, for schools to spend a whole week marching boys up and down the grounds, then the least they can do is to provide them with slouch hats. Field caps were abandoned in World War I: there are plenty of felt hats in the Army stores; and these should be issued to the cadets.—Yours, etc., Ist N.Z.E.F. February 12, 1946. [A senior officer at Southern Military District Headquarters, when asked to comment on this letter, said that the issuing of hats instead of field service caps for school cadets was at present being investigated.]
