CANTERBURY A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

The Canterbury Horticultural Society’s building fund .will benefit to the extent of £3OO, proceeds of the flower show held at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show in November, according to a report presented at a meeting of the association yesterday. The society thanked the association for placing at its disposal the facilities for raising such a good sum. A letter was received from the Mayor of Christchurch inviting the association to be represented at a meeting to be held on February 21 to discuss the advisability of holding an exhibition as part of the celebrations of the centenary of Canterbury in 1950.

In reporting on the annual show held in November, the president, Mr R. T. McMillan, said it was the most successful in the association’s history. The attendance was a record and the gate takings, £4535. were the highest on record.

The secretary reported that entries for the stud ram fair closed on February 11 and the total was 307, as compared with 389 at the 1945 fair. The particulars of the several breeds are as follows, the 1945 figure being given in parenthesis:—Southdowns, 136 (171); Ryelands. 8 (12); Border Leicesters, 20 (27); English Leicesters, 28 (57): Romney Marsh, 38 (51); Corriedales, 76 (67); Lincoln, 1 (1).

The offer of the Canterbury Rugby Union for the lease of the Show Grounds for a period of five years at £2OO a year was accepted.
