TUESDAY (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) TERM OF IMPRISONMENT James William Lewis,»a labourer and jockey, aged 30, pleaded guilty to converting to his own use a motor-car valued at £5OO, the property of Cornelius William Whetter, and to the theft of three cases and one box containing surgical instruments and drugs, of a total value of £4O, the property of the same person. De-tective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said that Dr. Whetter had left his car on a drive at the side of his house. At a later date accused was seen sitting in the car, in Colombo street, by a constable. The constable had started to walk accused to the police station, but in Cambridge terrace accused had bolted. After a chase he had been captured. The car had not been damaged, but had been driven about 100 miles. The instruments and drugs had been dumped in some trees on a river bank, but had been recovered intact. The Magistrate commented that accused had already been in trouble before on several occasions for offences of the same nature. Exceeding speed limit, Stuart Charles Watson, £2; Alan Wyke, £2; John Robert Ivan Williams, £2 (no driver's licence, 15s; no warrant of fitness. ss). In a case brought by the Transport Department, Kenneth Burton Mabin was fined £2 for exceeding the speed limit for heavy traffic vehicles. CIVIL CASES (Before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M.) Judgment for plaintiff by default was in the following civil cases:—R. T. Cowper v. G. Thomas, £2 12s 6d; Leonard James Coulter v. Alan Oswald Oakley, £132 2s Id; Thomas Joseph Lawlor, Ronald Archibald MacFarlane, William James Jenkins, Maurice Joseph Moffat (trustees 3rd Survey Troop, N.ZA., S.MJD.) v. J. H. Taylor, £6 5s sd. On a judgment summons, Alexander B. Kennedy was ordere’d to pay L. B. Davenport and Son £3B 19s forthwith, in default 38 days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended as long as defendant pays £2 a week.
