SPECIAL TASMAN CROSSING
AUSTRALIAN SHIP TO MAKE TRIP 700 PASSENGERS TO BE CARRIED I?' 40 am - ) CANBERRA. Jan. 7. The Commonwealth Government ha, arranged lor the former inter-stata steamer Katoomba (9424 tons) to make a special trip from Sydney to Wellington and back to relieve the pressure of people waiting to return to New Zealand. She will carry 700 passengers. Announcing this, the Minister of Supply and Shipping (Senator W. P. Ashley) emphasised that the Katoomba had been a troopship for six years, and that conditions for the New Zealand trip would not be as comfortable as those on a normal peacetime passenger service, though the disabilities would be less than those experienced by servicemen on troopships. “Everything possible will be done to make the people comfortable.” he said, “but people wishing to make the trip must remember that the Katoomba in her present condition is not a passenger ship, but a troopship.” The special New Zealand trip has been made possible because of the satisfactory progress .that has been made in bringing troops home from operational areas.
