FOOD ON WAY TO SINGAPORE
ASSURANCE GIVEN BY MOUNTBATTEN SINGAPORE, Jan. 6. Admiral Mountbatten, Suprertie Commander, South-east Asia, spoke to a large gathering in Singapore yesterday, when he presented campaign Stars to Chinese guerrilla leaders. He said his authority was restricted to preventing famine and restoring order. More rice and flour was on the way, he added.
He admitted that discomforts had been caused by so many people coming into Singapore. It was Britain’s intention to restore civil government to Malaya as soon as i possible.
Rations in Berlin Raised.— Reuter’s, quoting the American News Service in Germany, says that the rations for about 1,000.000 of Berlin’s lowest ration groups, including housewives and aged people, have been raised to 1500 calories a day to prevent epidemics.—L'ondon, January 6.
