CANApiAN SUPPLIES , COMING ENGLISH TOBACCO ALSQ EXPECTED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 7. z Fairly substantial quantities of Canadian cigarettes and English tobacco should begin to arrive in New Zealand about the middle of February,' according to information given in Auckland by the representative of one of the firms which will handle the supplies. It is also expected that South African tobacco will be arriving in New Zealand in the near future. Licences to import Canadian cigarettes and English tobacco were granted last month, it was stated, and quantities must be landed in the Dominion in the first six months of this year. The first shipment of cigarettes from Canada is expected to leave there this month, reaching New Zealand about the second week of February. Other shipments will probably be spread over several months. English tobacco -is likely to arrive about the same, time as the Canadian cigarettes.

With the arrival of z overseas shipments and a probable improvement in the output from Dominion factories, the plight of smokers in New Zealand is expected to improve considerably by the end of next month, according to the representative of an Auckland firm.

One importer said that any improvement in the supply position could be attributed largely to the desire of overseas firms to secure export trade. The scarcity of tobacco was not confined to New Zealand, but in countries where shqrtages existed manufacturers were anxious to obtain export markets as soon as possible.
