Peace-time Superfortress. The United States War Department revealed recently that the peace-time versions of the B-29 Superfortress will be officially known as B-50’s. The B-50 will have Pratt and Whitney radial engines of 3500 horsepower rating each, making a total of 14,000 horsepower, and reverse thrust propellers, for ease in taxying and as air brakes in flight. The wings will be of lighter metal and the landing gear will also be . lighter with a new ball bearing system of retracting mechanism. TTie engine nacelles Jjave been redesigned to incorporate maintenance improvements, some of which will provide for light repair work while in flight. New and larger tail surfaces are also installed.
