Typhoon Withdrawn Typhoon was withdrawn' from his engagements on the first two days of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at 9.15 a.m. yesterday, and was not handicapped for ’the Wellington Cup. Typhoon jarred a fetlock joint a few days ago, and it has been found necessary to ease him in his work. He has been left in his engagement for the final day of the meeting. Beneve was not handicapped for the Wellington Cup because he was not eligible for nomination. Th cup is confined to horses which have won a race of the‘Value of £5OO or more to the winner, or of races of a collective value of £750. Beneve’s winnings fall below this mark. Our Bridge and The Stormovik were not handicapped for the Apprentices’ Handicap because both are maidens, and horses of this class are not eligible for entry in hack events at the Wellington meeting. « A Select List

Expanse will be ridden in the Wellington Cup by H. Wiggins, who rode him in the Auckland Cup. Wiggins won the Trentham ®ace on Insurrection in 1922 and on Kindergarten in 1941.

Nominations for the Wellington. Racing Club’s three-day summer meeting totalled 727, and comprise 205 on the first day and 261 on each of the following days. Included in the Wellington Cup nominations are Golden Souvenir and Expanse, winners of the New Zealand and Auckland Cups this season; Kindergarten, who won the event in 1941; Caithness, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap last month; Miss Medley, winner of the Canterbury Cup; Financial, winner of the Manawatu and Wairarapa Cups; and other important holiday winners such as Alethea, Langue d’Or, FoJffiaven, Saludos, and Silver Sal. Longsword, Typhoon, and a Srevious New Zealand Cup winner in oyal Lancer are also in the field. The much hoped for clash between the two leading Auckland two-year-olds. Barwon and Majesty, in the Wellington Stakes, will not eventuate. Both were taken out of the race, but the leading South Island fillies, Blue Trout and Palm Bearer, stand their ground.

The. new weight-for-age race, the Trentham Stakes, of £l5OO, one mile and three furlongs, to be run on the final day, should be a feature of the meeting, as it has attracted most of the best horses who will be taking part at the meeting. One of the outstanding figures in the racing world during the holiday period was Financial, who followed up his triumphs in the Manawatu Cup and Louisson Memorial at Awapuni by adding the Wairarapa Cup at Tauherenikau on New Year’s Day, to bring his stake-win-nings to the substantial total of £4610, says the “Evening Post.” Wellington. His next engagement will probably be the Wellington - Cup. Financial is by Inflation from Manurewa by Spear Dance, and is owned by his breeder, Mr H. E. Edmunds, of Palmerston North. Financial was for sale as a juvenile for 200 guineas, but that reserve was not reached, and Mr Edmunds fortunately decided to carry on with Him. An Outstanding Performer

The Invercargill Cup was first run in 1883. and the most notable winner in the records of the race was Amythas, who won in 1920. Amythas was one of the best of his year when racing as a two-year-old. He won three times in his first season, his final success being in the Pacific Handicap at Wingatui, with 9-2, in Imin 12sec. In the Otago Handicap Amythas was weighted at 7-1, .and after an easy win also won the St. Andrew’s Handicap with 8-0. He received the same weight in the Invercargill Cup, of £lOOO. and the field was reduced to three starters, two of them with only a chance of getting place money. Amythas won 12 times and ran second once in his last 14 starts that season, and proved himself one of the best gallopers ever raced in New Zealand.
