OBITUARY

MR R. COULTER, M.P. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 31. The death pccurred to-day of Mr Robert Coulter, member of Parliament for Raglan, at Timaru, where his brotner and sister live. The funeral will be held at Wellington on Thursday afternoon. Mr Coulter was formerly member for Waikato, winning the seat in 1935. When the boundaries were altered before the 1938 election, he stood £or Hauraki and was defeated by the late Lieu-tenant-Colonel J. M. Allen. On the re-

tirement of the sitting member, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Mr Coulter was selected by the Labour Party as its candidate for the 1943 election and won the seat by 108 votes from Mr R. J. Glasgow (National).

Born in Christchurch 55 years ago. Mr Coulter went to Te Aroha in 1904 and established an auctioneering business. After four years as a councillor, he was elected Mayor of Te Afoha and held office continuously for 20 years. He was a member of the Thames Harbour Board for a like period, being chairman for four years. He was for many years president of the Northern Athletic Union. He was also president of the Te Aroha Aero Club and chairman of the Te Aroha Unemployment Committee.
