TWO APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 1. Air Chief Marshal Sir William Sholto Douglas and Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Travers Harris have been promoted to the rank of marshal of the Royal Air Force with effect from to-day.

During the war Sir Sholto Douglas was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief. Coastal Command, and Sir Arthur Harris was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Bomber Command. NEW AUSTRALIAN KNIGHTS (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 1. The Australian New Year Honours List includes knighthoods to Mr Frederic Lloyd Dumas, chairman and managing-director of Adelaide Advertiser Newspapers, Ltd., and to Mr Edward Wheewall Holden, chairman of General Motors-Holden, Ltd. HONOURS LIST FOR FIJI (R ec 9 p m.) SUVA, January 1. The New Year honours for Fiji include:— K.B.E.— Lala Sukuna. C.M.G.: the Hon. J. F. Nicoll, Colonial Secretary. C.8.E.: Mr T. W. Alport Barker, proprietor of the Fiji “Times and Herald.” Military awards are:— C.B E.: Brigadier Dittmer, 0.8. E.; Commander H. A. Hill, R.N.R. M.8.E.: Captain J. p. Brodie, N.Z.E.F., and Captain R. Kable. The M.B.E. is also awarded .to two Fijians and the King’s Police Medal to a native constable. CHURCHILL’S NEW YEAR MESSAGE “NO EASY PATH TO PROSPERITY’’ • LONDON. Dec. 31. Mr Churchill, in a New Year messase to the Primrose league, said the British had purchased victory by the greatness of their nature and their own unflinching efforts, but in the moment of triumph they were bePided by false prophets and now stood in danger of losing some of the fruits of victory for which they had paid so much. "We will only win the peace as we w °n the war. by character and hard work, ’ he said. “There is no easy path to prosperity. "The Empire and Liberty still remains the call which leads us on.”
