RETIREMENT OP BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL SECRETARY About 200 old boys of the ChristBoys’ High School met in the Old Boys Football Club’s rooms last evening to entertain Captain W. Hoar, who recently retired after 34 years at the school as secretary and drill instructor. A T £ e i e^? ster of the school (Mr A. hj. Caddick) paid a warm tribute to the work done by Captain Hoar particularly in the help he had always given the staff. His character was as his famed word of command—clean cut and straightforward. As a man he was honest, honourable, and would always be honoured by members of the staff. Mr C, Miln spoke of Captain Hoar’s work as a drill instructor, and referred to the valuable groundwork he had given old boys serving in the two wars. He was a master of his subject, and had earned the respect he had been given. E ' B E. Taylor, president of the Old Boys’ Association, thanked Captain Hoar for the long and valued service he had given the school. He presented Captain Hoar with a substantial cheque, subscriptions for which had come from old boys all over New Zealand.

Mr F. J. Foley, president of the football club, also spoke. In a brief reply. Captain Hoar expressed his thanks, and said he hoped that his reminiscences, based on his experiences since joining the Army in 1884, would appear in book form
