More Calls to Fires The Christchurch Fire Brigade has been called out to more tires in the city and suburbs in the last eight months of this year than in the same period last year. Figures given by the superintendent, Mr A. Morrison, in his report to the Christchurch Fire Board last evening showed that in the eight months there have been 329 fires of all kinds, compared with 273 last year. The fires are classed as actual fires, chimney fires, and hedge, grass and rubbish fires. During the period under review there were 69 false automatic alarms, compared with 34 last year. Forty-three alarms were classed as justifiable this year, and 39 last year. Of the malicious alarms 67 were from street boxes and 20 from exchange telephones, the figures last year being 57 and 32, respectively. Altogether the brigade answered 534 calls in the eight months, compared with 435 last year. Last month the brigade answered 106 calls of different kinds. There were 31 actual fires, four chimney fires, and 30 grass, hedge, and rubbish fires. Twenty false alarms were recorded on the automatic system, and there were 10 justifiable alarms.
