* THURSDAY (Before Mr H. P. Lawry. S.M.) MOTORIST CHARGED Leonard Anthony Schimanski, a share milker, appeared on charges of negligent driving a motor-car on the Main North road, thereby causing the death of Ellen Waif or d Bloom, and of having no driver's licence and no warrant of fitness. Mr E . S. Bowie appeared for Schimanski. . The charge of negligent driving was adjourned sine die. For not haviijg a driver’s licence, Schimanski was fined 20s, and for having no warrant of fitness he was fined .ILLEGAL SALE OF TYRES William George Laine was charged that, without the consent of the secretary of the Minister of Supply and Munitions or the secretary’s appointee, he sold two new motor tyres. Detective-Sergeant F. J. Brady said that on November 3 Laine, a partner in a car sales firm, had bought two new’ tyres from a man who had since been dealt with by the Court for theft. Laine had paid £ls for the tyres, and had sold them to another dealer for £24. Laine was fined £lO and ordered to nay costs. • FINE IMPOSED Amy Gwendoline Randall pleaded guilty ft? charges of breaches of a prohibition order at Kaiapoi. On one charge, RandaU was fined £2. and on the second charge she was convicted and discharged. ADMITTED TO PROBATION Joseph Sydney Smith, a seaman, aged 18, and John Rodger Wood, a labourer,' aged 18, were each charged with stealing a rifle valued at £2, the property of Lawrence Riley Wilkes. Smith (Mr J. K. Moloney) pleaded not guilty, and Wood (Mr W. R, Lascelles) pleaded guilty. • Detective-Sergeant F. J. Brady said accused had been camped at the Kowhai river on October 27, and had accepted a lift to Amberley in a passing car. When they left the car they had taken a rifle belonging to Wilkes, the owner of the car. Smith was admitted to probation for 18 months, and Wood was admitted to probation for two years. REMANDED Sydney Reginald Thorpe (Mr D. J. Hewitt) was remanded to appear on December 20 on a charge of stealing petrol coupons for 56 gallons, valued at £7, the property of unknown persons. Bail was allowed at £SO. with one surety of £SO. CASE- ADJOURNED A charge against Edward Leslie Sullivan of lighting a fire in the open without a permit was adjourned sine die. CONVICTION ENTERED Oswald Spencer, a hairdresser, aged 19, for whom Mr C. V. Lester appeared, was convicted and discharged on a charge Of assault In Manchester street on October 27. DRUNKENNESS Henry Kllgour was fined 10s for being found drunk in Hereford street. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE Albert Francis Woodham, a joiner, aged 46. of 33 Taylor’s road, was charged with breaking and entering the house of Reuben Henry Betts, 197 Innes road, with intent to commit a crime. Betts gave evidence that he had. left his house at 6.15 p.m. on December 6, and had returned about 9.30 p.m. to find that a glass panel id the front door had been smashed. Inside the house he had not found anything missing. William Walker, a retired farmer living in Innes road, said he had "seen a man “fumbling about” with the front door of the house owned by Betts. He had informed the police. Detective H. Alisop said he had gone to the house and had found Woodham hiding behind a drawing-room .cabinet. Accused had made a statement ,to the police in which he said he had been passing the house and had had “a sudden urge" to break and enter the house and see what he could get. Woodham pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. An application for bail was refused. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE A charge of attempting to commit suicide at Lyttelton was brought against a man whose name the Magistrate suggested should not be published. It was not a case where he could order suppression of the name, he said, but he could suggest that it be not published. Accused was convicted and ordered to appear for sentence if called on within six months.
