At Government House, Auckland, on Tuesday evening, his Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Cyrii Newall, received girl guides and boy scouts representing troops and companies from the Auckland ares at a farewell parade. His Excellency, as Dominion Chief bcout, presented awards to Miss J. Bergm Mr A. J. Hutchinson, and Mr tx. A. Goodwin for services rendered to the movement in New Zealand. Members of the Riccarton Garden Club met for their Christmas party at the home of Mrs J. L. Hay, Puriri street,-«/here a pleasant afternoon was spent Mrs O. M. Miller gave a demonstration oh flower arrangement. Winners of the competitions were Mrs R. Keir, Mrs F. Willi?mson, and Mrs J. Barrett. To celebrate the first Christmas after the war, a special tea was served by the committee. The final afternoon social for the year of the Canterbury women's section of the Returned Services' Association was held yesterdsy in the Jellicoe Hall. There was, a large attendance, and among those present were overseas wives of' New Zealand servicemen who have" recently arrived in the city. The president (Mrs H. G. Livingstone) spoke on the various activities of the section, and .thanked those who had assisted during the year. Musical and elocutionary items" were : presented by Mrs Collins and Mrs Clifton Mogg. Miss Mavis Reese, president of the Christchurch branch of Columba College Old Girls* Association, welcomed a record number of. members and guests to the branch's annual reunion and luncheon party, held yesterday in the Winter Garden. The tables were decorated with flowers of blue and gold—the college colours—and each guest of honour received a shoulder spray of blue and gold flowers, made and given by Mrs W. J. Hudson, a member of the branch. Specially invited guests included Mrs H. R. Tasker and Miss Nancy Bruce, president and secretary respectively of a newlyfounded branch of the association in Ashburton, Lady Hicks (formerly Miss Florence Haggitt), from Australia, and representatives of Austral Girton, St. Margaret's, Christchurch Girls' High School, and Rangi-ruru Old Girls' Associations, and of the local branches of Nelson College, St. Hilda's, and Otago High School Old Girls' Association. Mrs A. H. Rothenberg, on behalf of the visitors, thanked Miss Reese and her committee for their hospitality and for the continued good fellowship that existed amongst kindred associations. A knitting guild which for five years met weekly at the home of Mrs James Murphy, Fendalton. to work for men of the services, has disbanded. At the final meeting, Mrs Murphy' thanked Mrs R. J. McLaren, who had regularly attended the meetings, and had read to members while they worked. Recitations were given by Mrs Bernard Banks, and an irlteresting talk on "The Career of a Nurse" was given by Miss F. Wilson. , A presentation wgg made by members to Mrs Murphy, and to each guest she gave a small Christmas gift as a memento of the hours they had spent working together during the years of war. The St. Martins-Opawa Garden Club met at "Wendouree," Fifield terrade, the home of Mrs George Clark. Mrs Clark was the speaker, and gave an interesting address on the-herbaceous border. Competition winners were as follows:—a posy, Mrs T. Hannibal 1, Mrs Clark 2; roses, Mrs Clark 1, Mrs J. Cowell 2; potatoes, Mrs C. T. McAloon 1, Mrs H. C. Stevens 2. The lady editor of "The Press" gratefully acknowledges a donation from an anonymous friend and a gift of marmalade from Mrs David Crozier for the "Glenelg"' health camp, and a parcel of books from Mrs G. NAVY LEAGUE PARTY

MRS H. WYATT HONOURED Members of the three divisions of the Chnstchurch Navy League—the executive committee, the women's auxiliary, and the junior branch—held a 5 o clock Christmas party yesterday a ! «? em V er » a '" Park terrace, the home of Mrs J. Nutt, who kindly lent her reception rooms for the gathering. There was a full representation of esch group, and after seasonal wishes had been exchanged, the president of the league, Commander C. H Kersley made a nresentation of a gold wrist watch to Mrs Henry Wyatt, president of the -women's auxiliary. Commander Kersley spoke warmly of Mrs Wyatt's great work in the auxiliary s wool room during- the last six years, and described it as a fulltime job. Yet, in addition, she had given helpful service to many other branches of the league's work and to other organisations in the city Mr A. S. Taylor (a former president), Mrs G. W. C. Smithson (treasurer of the auxiliary), and Miss Joan Burt (president of the junior branch) all praised Mrs Wyatt's organising ability and capacity for hard work, and mentioned particularly the happy relations that prevailed in all the organisations with which she was connected. Mr George Hall proposed the health of Mrs Wyatt. and the toast was drunk with musical honours.

Mrs Wystt, in acknowledging the gift, and the good feeling that had prompted the gesture, said that the success of her work was largely due to the co-operation of all members of £he Navy League. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Rhoda Gladys, only daughter of the Rev. H. S. and Mrs Kings, Rawene, North Auckland, and formerly of Christchurch, and Alfred James, eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. E. Ordish. Dalefield, Carterton.

Rumour Denied.— Commenting on a rumour that the. Government intends to take over one of the largest stock and station agencies, the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W.,Nash) said yesterday morning that he had heard nothing of such a proposal.—(P.A )

CHRISTMAS PARTY | CANTERBURY WOMEN'S CLUB A Christmas party was held last evening at the Canterbury Women's Club, where a large gathering of members was welcomed by the newly-elec-ted president, Mrs J. P. Rickard.- An enjoyable programme, arranged by Mrs J. C. Cullman, was provided largely by new members of the club. Songs were sung by Mrs A. C. Ledsham, Mrs M. E. Price, Miss M. O'Connor, and Mrs T. Kennedy, and piano solos were played by Mrs H. E. Booker; Mrs Enid Frye and Mrs J. P. O'Sullivan presented elocutionary items. . Choruses were sung by the club's music circle, and a short play was staged by the public speaking circle. Mrs Cullman, Miss K. O'Connor, and Mrs H. Wilson were accompanists. ' A beneficent Father Christmas (Mrs W. K. Lauchland) distributed gifts from a brightly decorated Christmas tree, and as a finale the company exchanged good wishes and sung several Christmas carols. Before supper was served, Miss M. Spence, the holder of the Corrie Aslin McLaren Cup for outstanding service to the club or the community, presented the trophy to this year's winner, Mrs H. Wyatt, who thanked members of the club for the loyal support they had given her in patriotic work. PARTY AT SANATORIUM Patients at the Cashmere Sanatorium, many of whom, in a few days, will be going to their homes for a few weeks' vacation, were entertained at a very enjoyable Christmas party held last evening at the Coronation Hospital. An unusually good programme, arranged by Mr J. H. Cocks, a staunch friend of the patients, gave pleasure to the large audience, in which were several visitors interested in the sanatorium. The artists were Mr Cocks and Mr Robert Allison (songs and duets), Misses Margaret Ward (songs), Merlyn Todd and Isobel Purse (vocal duets and solos), Miss Nancy Wise, Mrs W. H. Collins, Mr J.-Lockhart, and the Rev. J. Flewellen (humour), Mrs M. McNair' (piano solo and accompaniments), Mr Charles Coates (novelty items), and the W.E.A. Players (sketch).

Dr. I. C. Macintyre, medical superintendent of the sanatorium, thanked Mr Cocks and his party .for providing the programme, Mr Hale for help in the lighting of the. stage, and several friends for supplying transport. To the patients he wished a speedy and complete recovery, and urged those who were going home not to overtire themselves or try to do too much. He expressed pleasure at having the opportunity of helping back to health some former prisoners of war, who had endured terrible trials at the hands of the Japanese. After the programme, Father Christmas distributed gifts to the patients.
