TURF GOSSIP

For West Coast John o* London- has been sold by Mr K. Austin to a West Coast owner, and will be trained at Omoto by C. J. Walsh The well-bred son of Solicitor General and Raphis, a sister to Phar Lap, has been a disappointing proposition in recent months, but should do well on the West Coast holiday circuit. Nominated for Wingatui Riccarton stables are represented by the following horses in the nominations lor the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting;— Commemorate, Palpitate, Appeasement, Belle Leonne. Deep Harmony, Detain, Debater, Eudora, . Superlative, Tenor Royal, Chain, Deficiency. Denary, Montezuma. Peculate Peter Gazelle, Rahiri, Ruling Moment. Saint Joachim, Sanskrit, Derene, Gamble. Benbecula, Piccolo. Royal Rae, Silver Sal. Cipher. Lakhnau, Prana, Rahine, Regal Lily, Royal Anne, Royal Tan, Burberry, Double Cross, Foxhaven, Gunga Din. Avonbridge, Altruist, Pink Clover. Racket. Thornbridge. and Wild Ribbon. Rehandicapped As a result of his win in the Hamilton Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday. Raka»Ui has incurred a rehandicap of 31b for the Auckland Cup, making his weight 8-10. At Ellerslie Having his first start since joining D. J. Arnott's stable, at Ellerslie, Take-a-Lot finished second in the Vauxhall Handicap at Ellerslie on December 1. He has been placed in each of his three starts and shapes like an early winner. Take-a-Lot had done little fast work since going to Ellerslie, and should be susceptible to improvement. He is a three-year-old by Defaulter from Spinalot, by Iliad from imported Spionetta, and is thus a brother to the Riccarton two-year-old. Spiora. A Strict Rule ■Jockeys were told by the stewards at Randwick recently that in future they will »ot be permitted to leave the Jockeys' room till after they have fulfilled their engagements for the day. Jockeys who leave the room early will be unable to return till after the last race unless they get special permission from the stewards. Jockeys cannot be supplied with refreshments from outside without special permission. In future, light refreshments will be supplied in the jockeys' room. The chief steward, Mr. J. Donohoe, said that anyone infringing these rulings would be dealt with. The vice-chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, Mr A. G. Potter, denied a suggestion that the rulings were framed to prevent people communicating with or - conveying messages to jockeys before races.

Success ol Royal Colours "It is very fitting that Victory Y-ear should be celebrated by His Majesty enJoying his best season on the turf since Sun Chariot and Big Game only Just trussed carrying all before them in the classics three years ago," states "Sporting Life," London. "The cheers that greeted Kingstone when he stormed away from Cadet in the two-mile Mapledurham Handicap at Ascot on September 1 testified to we general pleasure of racegoers at the King owning such a grand young stayer. The performance was most impressive, for. besides Cadet, the field included the greatly-improved Star Lover. First Success Stenelaus, which won his first race in Australia last Saturday, but only after a protest had been sustained, is a four-year-old gelding by Foxlight from the Stonyhurst-bred Knock Out. by Winning Hit from Rivalry, by Antagonist from.the Martian mare. Equipment. He won tnree races in the North Island towards the end of last season, and was sold to go to Australia at a price stated to be 5000 guineas.

£112,000 PAID FOR STARDUST IN.Z Press Association—Copyright) BOMBAY, December 11. Stardust was bought as a yearling in 1938 for 1450 guineas, and went to the stud in 1940. He has been very successful, siring many winners, including eight out of 15 races last season. 4 The Aga Khan said the figures showed that the buying of bloodstock was a legitimate speculation. .Stardust was bought by a British syndicate. There are 40 shares of £2BOO each. Stardust will remain at Gilltown Stud. Ireland.

TROTTING NOTES

Omitted ■ Volo's Victory was omitted from the nominations for the Victory Handicap, the principal event on the first day of the Westport Trotting Club's programme. Led All the 'Vay The three-year-old Dandy Grattan made an exhibition of some of the aged horses in the Otago Handicap at Forbury when he began quickly from a bad position and led all the way to win, without being extended, by two and a half lengths from Pointsman. V. Alborn has the Grattan Loyal youngster engaged in the Snowdon Trot this week, and if he elects to set the pace with him he should again prove hard to catch. Stopped Quickly Driven by L. Mahoney, Andy Direct had a good lead at one stage of the second division of the Frankton Handicap at Claudelands, but he stopped quickly, and was beaten out of a place. Bred at Opunake by Mr H. W. Barraclough, he is by Robert Ear] from Joy Direct, which is by The Triumph from the Rothschild mare. Grace Direct. Successful Breed The Ashburton course has been a happy hunting ground, for B. Grice for many years, and with Implacable and Haughty engaged at the meeting on Boxing Day, he seems assured of getting expenses at the meeting. Both these pacers, which were bred by Mr Grice, are-out of Regal Voyage, the dam of another winner in Traverse. showed at Oamaru, when she finished fourth in the Hannon Memorial after making a fine run over the last half-mile, that she has still to be reckoned with, and she should add interest to the Ashburton Trotting Cup-. Now a five-year-old, Implacable has been patiently handled, and it was not until the Methven Trotting Club's meeting in September that he was taken to the races. At his only start he was a long way back in the early part of the Mount Hutt Handicap, but he made 'a strong i nishing. run. which carried hirv< into third place behind Pony Express ar.ti Ace of Diamonds. In anticipation of a win, Implacable has been nominated in the faster class. McLean Handicap, and this should be a good guide to his owner's opinion of him. Still Going Strong Alter his unplaced performances at the Cup meeting. Dusky Sound was allowed to miss his engagement in the President's Handicap at Forbury. The Happy Voyage gelding will be given a run at New Brighton this week, and will then contest the Ashburton Trotting Cup Handicap on Boxing Day. Foaled In 1933, he carries his age well, as his record of four placings in six starts this season shows. Likely Improver Calumet Queen was sent out 2, 2 in the betting on the Duvauchelle Trot at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's meeting last month, and she showed some speed to be prominent over the first mile. Trained for Mr S. Leggett by A. Leggett, Calumet Queen is by Calumet Axworth from Heather Queen, a particularly good mare which was bred by C Nc-rdquist, at Methven By Rey de Oro she is from the Diadem mare. Scottish Queen. Expensive to Follow Jeeves is proving an expensive horse to follow Although he has not returned a dividend in his last nine starts, he has been running encouraging races, but has not been favoured with any luck in the running tn his last three starts. He began safely in the December Handicap at. Forbury, but appeared to strike trouble and was soon. racing at the rear of the field. The Maxegin pacer is honest, and he should soon get his reward. Can Trot Fast The Maxegin trotter, Walter Jingle, has started only twice since being trained by G. Cameron at New Brighton, end at his last appearance he conceded Accord 24 yards start in the Lewis Pass Handicap at Reefton, and finished within a length of him. Walter Jingle can trot fast, and once Cameron gets him to do his best he should win several races. He looks one of the best prospects for the holiday racing At Blenheim C R, Berkett, who Is now training Sandbtone at Blenheim, took the Sandydale gelding to the Reefton meeting, but a fourth placing in two starts was the best Sandstone could do for him. If Berkett can get him to show the form he displayed earlier in the season to finish second to Galavena at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting, he should soon win races. Doing Well Forewarned has done well since being trained at Addington by F. G. Holmes, and she is carded to make her first appearance in the trials at New Brighton. The Swordsman trotter gave her best performance at the Cup meeting to finish second to Fantom in the Dominion Trotting Cup, and she looks a good prospect to win a race off her present mark. Will Take Time Since paying his big dividend at Greymouth. Sir Walter has been unplaced in his last two starts. Only a four-year-old the U. Scott gelding will benefit with age and experience, and he should develop into a good trotter. H. J Smith has taken every opportunity to give him experience, and he will give him another outing at the Owners' and Breeders' trials to-day. Consistent Tilly As a two-year-old the Gold Bar filly Local Gold was beaten into second place in three of her four races and at her second appearance this season she failed to catch Bonny Clare by naif a length in the Riccarton Stakes. .This youngster is better than most of her age and off the 24 yards mark In the Glendore Trot at Motukarara this week she should be the hardest to beat.
