FRIDAY (Before his Honour Mr Justice Northcroft.) PRISONERS SENTENCED William George Davison, a motor mechanic, and Allan Chisholm Swinton a labourer, appeared for Sentence on two joint charges of breaking, entering, and theft. Davison also appeared for sentence" oh a further similar charge To which he had pleaded guilty. -His Honour said that the offences were committed while Swinton and Davison were fugitive after escaping from the Borstal institution. He had taken into account that the offences were in some degree incidental to offences for which the prisoners still had to be. punished. Swinton and Davison were each sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative with thenpresent sentences.

John Francis Samuel Keen, a farm labourer, aged 31, appeared for sentence on a charge of theft of a wireless, receiving set valued at £36, at Temuka.

His Honour said that Keen had a very bad record, and that he had been warned that he would be declared an habitual criminal in 1941. since when he had committed minor offences. A second similar warning would be recorded. Keen was sentenced to six - months' imprisonment with hard labour. William Oliver Nelson, a fruit hawker, aged 29, pf Halswell, for whom Mr J. K. Moloney appeared, was sentenced to reformative detention for a period of 12 months on a charge of indecent assault on a female. Nelson had pleaded guilty to the charge in the Magistrate's Court. Mr. Moloney said that Nelson had had three falls as a steeplechase rider and had twice suffered concussion. The falls had adversely affected Nelson's health.
