First In, Golden Souvenir, High Play, Kevin, Piccolo. Beau Cheval, Palifcey, and Miss Medley. Immediate, First %, and High Play are still in Australia, and Kevin can be considered as hav,lng finished his racing career. Golden -sSouvenir is an unlikely visitor, as it is ptended to take him to Wingatui, and Jb race him in the Wellington Cup next jsonth. Piccolo, Beau Cheval, and Palllrey did not give much encouragement pr the trip by their recent efforts. It jfwill be left, therefore, to Miss Medley jSio carry the southern banner, and a deSdsion regarding her programme will be airade after this week's racing.

Weeli Day Racing Although no official announcement has been made, several clubs with two-day permits have been granted permission to race on week-days. Broughton secured a last-min-ute ride on Miss Medley, winner of the New Zealand Oaks last year, but he was unlucky to miss the mount on Lady Scholar, this year's winner. He was originally engaged to ride Lady Scholar, but when it was thought he would not be fit to ride on the second day, after his fall from Keening on the first day. J McFarlane was given the mount. I Broughton made a quick recovery, and iwas able to ride on Saturday; but the I arrangement with McFarlane was allowed

■/■ to stand. Broughton secured the mount l on Swingalong. whichi acted as runner- »:. up to Lady Scholar. This was McFarlane's ; | last mount in New Zealand before leav-J-jing for India this week. W. J. Stevens, J:vjwho will accompany McFarlane, had two pjwlns at Bulls on Saturday, and these three wins at Woodville in the a previous week.

Not Favoured "Thoroughbred strains would seriously deteriorate if artificial insemination was adapted," said Lord Roseberry, speaking !»i Newmarket. Too Slow at the Start Joe's Dream, which is owned and trained at Dunedin by L. C. Torrance, is an aged gelding by Wrack from a Peter Chenault mare. He started in the Otago Handicap on Saturday, but was too slow off the mark to have any chance. Stake Winners The following were the principal stake winners at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's meeting: W. L. Parkinson, £465; O. E. Hooper, £405; H. Stafford, £290; D. Coffey. £265; M. C. McTigue, £235: P. A. Watson, £235; C. L. Rhodes, £225; F. E. Graham, £140; V. Alborn. £140; F. Young. £l4O. Broke at Start Fantom's sister, Valola, was well supported in the St. Kilda Handicap at Forbury. but she lost any chance she had when she broke at the start. Valola is taking time to settle down, but she should be well worth all the trouble M. Holmes is taking with her. At Nightcaps R. W Townley has a useful team in work at Nightcaps, including Sure Bond. Ima Grattan, Grattan Wave, Convincer, and Jolly Biddy. Jolly Biddy is a smart mare by Sandydale from Jolly Girl, and at her five starts has recorded a win and two second placings.- At her only appearance this season she won the Waverley Harness Trot at the Southland Racing Club's meeting at . Invercargill. and Townley expects her to carry on* to much better compajiy. Convincer, a mare by Quite Sure from Sun Deoch, has not won for some time, but she showed signs of returning to her best form when she finished second to Happy King in the New River Harness Trot at Invercargill recently. Grattan Wave, a gelding by Grattan Loyal from Wave Soon, 4ias taken time to settle down to serious racing but the manner In which He finished on to dead-heat with Master Robert in the Oreti Trot at Winton left no doubt as to his ability. Besides the horses named, Townley has several promising youngsters in work, and his prospects look bright for a successful season. Auckland Trip Probable Although Emulous is eligible for the main event on the New Brighton Trotting Club's programme, it will probably be found that he will make his next appearance at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting at the end of the month, where he will have several opportunities of adding to his good record. The Jack Potts horse began his racing career as a three-year-old. At his first appearance he finished fourth to Scottish Emperor, Acropolis, and Native Scott in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes at the Metropolitan Trotting Club's 1944 Easter meeting, and a fortnight later he finished a good second to Jack High in the Hutt Handicap at Wellington. His next placing was to finish third to War Form and Traverse in the Trial Handicap at the Ashburton .Trotting Club's meeting in June aftei having all the worst of the running, and after that performance he was highly rated by keen judges. His record since then has confirmed the high opinion formed of him. and in 17 starts he has finished out of -the money only twice, winning six races and gaining four seconds, four thirds, and a fourth placing. Emulous is undoubtedly a Cup horse in the making, and, now assessed on 4min 27sec, he should make the grade comfortably • before the season closes. Bred by Mr A. Haslett, Rakaia, Emulous races in the interests of Mrs M. A. Haslett, for whom he is trained at Rakaia by W K. Tatterson.
