IMPORTATION OF TOBACCO

. ♦ LICENCES GRANTED SUPPLIES FROM STERLING SOURCES (Prom Our Parliamentary ; Reporter.) * WELLINGTON, December 4. Licences for the importation of tobacco have been granted to several New Zealand firms on the understanding that supplies are obtained from sterling sources. It is thought that the first supplies may be available in January. When the Government made it known that it would grant licences if imports could be obtained from sterling sources, importers communciated with English firms with which they had been ; negotiating for some months, and certificates were obtained that definite quantities could be forwarded. Applications were then made for licences, and it is understood that several have already been granted. The local position has also improved. November production of New Zealand factories exceeded the good output of October, so that larger allocations to retailers are expected. The lower allocations of November were based on the comparatively poor output of September. Provided there is no unexpected development there are grounds for hoping that the worst of the tobacco shortage may be over.
