TE WAI POUNAMU COLLEGE

ANNUAL MEETING OF COUNCIL

As evidence of progress, the college had been able to report a steadily mounting roll number, said the report presented at the annual meeting of the council of subscribers and friends of Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College last evening. It was pleasing to note, the report said, that the Education Department had recognised the college as a registered secondary school. Archbishop West-Watson presided over a large attendance. His Grace congratulated the college on its financial stability, which a few years ago had seemed very remote, and said that from now on the annual subsidy of £lO a pupil would be received. ; The sum of £GOO had .been given by the Sargood Trust—£loo for improvements in library facilities and ft 500 towards the cost of a new launry block. This gift brought the total receipts from the Sargood Trust Fund up to £9OO. The newly formed body, Friends of Te Wai Pounamu, had given £75 and a gift of £SOO was the result of the work of a special committee headed by Miss Eveleyn Couzins just before her death. The scholarship system had had a great bearing on the school’s success, and this year two scholarships, each for a period of four years, would be provided by the Old Girls’ Association and executive council of the Old Girls’ Associations. Both would be for girls who wished to become teachers or nurses.

The Rev. j. M, Fisher was elected to the committee in place of Mr A. Hunnibell, who had resigned. During the evening a musical programme was provided by Maori girls, the items including action songs by Ngati-Otautahi members, and new numbers by pupils of the college. Miss Kura Tahiwi gave an explanation of some Maori customs and a screening of Maori films was shown.
