COMPETITION MATCHES In the Canterbury Croquet Association’s intermediate Hag match competition. Barrington beat Elmwood by 6 games to 3 and Barrington beat United by 5 games to 4. Barrington beat Hornby by 9 games to 0 In a junior A grade flag match. Six hundred and fifty-three garments were handed in at the wool room of the women’s auxiliary of the Christchurch Navy League during November, and two cases of woollen comforts were sent to headquarters in Wellington. This was reported at the monthly meeting of the auxiliary, at which the president, Mrs H. Wyatt, presided yesterday morning. It was announced that the wool room would close, on December 14, and reopen early in February. Final arrangements were made for the sea cadets’ annual garden party to be held this week. Activities of • members, during, the month included the selling of nealth stamps, the visiting of naval personnel in hospitals, and the staffing of the information bureau in Cathedral square.

Artists who provided entertainment during the year at the monthly meetings of Cercle Francais were the guests of honour at high tea given by the committee of the cercle at Mayfair Lounge yesterday. The president, M. H. Honore, who with Madame Honore welcomed the guests, thanked all those who had helped to make the regular gatherings of the cercle interesting and enjoyable. A special welcome was accorded Mr G. E. F. Kingscote, Consular Agent for France, and Mrs Kingscote. Later all present attended a picture party at the Avon Theatre,

“Health” was the subject of a talk given by Miss E. M. Guy at a meeting of the Christchurch Business and Professional Women’s Club, and this was followed by an address on the Maori race by the guest speaker, Mr Vernon Thomas. Songs were sung by Miss Jean Maclachlan, for whom Mrs J. G. Maclachlan was ’ accompanist. Mrs L. J. Cattell presided, Misses Guy and Bower and Mrs St, Herat were hostesses, and Mrs C. G. Schumacher thanked the speakers and the artists. Health stamps to the value of £SBOO were sold in, the Christchurch postal area during October and November. This includes the proceeds of the drive made last month, with much success, by poatwomen and postmen in the citv and suburbs. Many of the suburban post offices have sold, their entire stock of the 3d stamps, and one postmaster, after supplying a North Island order for £lB worth of stamps, reported that he had few of either denomination left in his office.
