COMPULSORY MEMBERSHIP (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 4. An amendment to the clause in the Statutes Amendment Bill dealing with compulsory union membership for rail* way employees was moved by Mr T. C. Webb (Opposition, Kaipara) in the House of Representatives this evenin
The amendment was that compulsory membership should not be enforced in railway organisations until the majority of workers had decided by secret ballot in favour of such a course. Mr G. H. Mackley (Opposition, Masterton) seconded the amendment, and said its adoption would be to the advantage of all railway workers. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semplel opposed the amendment, and said it was useless and ridiculous to take a ballot to allow the tai> to wag the dog. Of 24,000 railway workers he doubted if 1000 ‘were nonunionists.
Mr E. B. Corbett (Opposition. Egmont) said the amendment would’ allow workers the democratic right to show their desire by ballot. The amendment was defeated by 40 votes to 32.
