STRIKE CALLED OFF
WORK RESUMED AT PORT CHALMERS
CP.A.) DUNEDIN. Dec. 4. The 250 members of the Waterside Workers’ Union at Port Chalmers who have been on strike since last Thursday resumed work this afternoon. Their decision to call off the strike was the outcome of an undertaking received from Wellington and discussed at a meeting that their grievances involving conditions and rates of pay for dock workers, compared with those for work on the wharves, had been considered by the national executive of the union and that certain recommendations would be made to the Minister of Marine (the Hon, J. O’Brien).
The action of the national executive in evading the claims of watersiders to have their award placed on the same basis as one covering dock workers was discussed at the meeting. The opinion was widely expressed that the executive’s delay in dealing with the grievances precipitated the strike.
The two vessels affected by the dispute, the overseas vessel Glenogle and the coastal motor-vessel Storm, will now be worked. The Glenogle had loaded only 700 bales of her cargo of 21,000 bales of wool to be shipped to the United Kingdom. It is expected that the Glenogle will adhere to her original sailing schedule and will leave Port Chalmers at the end of the week.
