NAVAL AWARD

KING'S TELESCOPE WON BY N.Z. CADET (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) . WELLINGTON, November 1. Naval Cadet Neil D. Anderson, R.N.Z.N., a son of Mr Eric D. Anderson, of Hastings, has received the un-' usual distinction of being awarded the King's telescope on completion of his naval cadet training in the training cruiser Frobisher, according to a statement by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones). This award is a telescope presented by the King at the end of _each cadet training term to the best all-round special entry cadet. This is the first time that it has ever been won by a New Zealand cadet; and only the second time that it has been awarded to a Dominion cadet. The telescope, which is embossed with the Royal crest, was presented to Cadet Anderson by the Fifth Sea Lord, Rear-Admiral T. H. Troubridge. D.S.O. and bar. - Cadet Anderson, together . with Cadets B. F. Goddard (Palmerston North) and J. D. Gresson (Christchurch), was entered in the Royal New Zealand Navy on November 2, 1944. The cadets began their training at the Royal Naval College,- Eaton, in January of this year. Upon completion of one term at the Royal Naval College they were appointed to Frobisher for a further term, upon completion of which they left for Australia to join the ships of the British Pacific Fleet, in which they will serve their midshipman's time. Advice has been received from England that the three cadets have been promoted to the rank of midshipman, Royal New Zealand Navy, with seniority from September, 1945. The Minister also said that cadetships in the Royal New Zealand Navy for the year 1945 had been granted to lan S. Monro and Eric R. Ellison both of Christchurch, and Henry R. Simmonds, of Dannevirke. The cadetships are hv the executive, supply, and engineering branches respectively. These cadets will sail for England towards the end of this month, and begin their training at the Royal Naval College, Eaton, in January of next year.
