FIRE IN NORTH CANTERBURY
♦ I " HAYLAND» HOMESTEAD DESTROYED One of the oldest homesteads in North Canterbury, "Hayland," between Rangiora and Glentui, the home of Mr J. D. McCracken, was completely destroyed by fire on Tuesday afternoon. The house, which was built nearly 70 years ago, consisted of 13 rooms, and was a well-known landmark in the district It is thought that the fire was caused by a faulty electric fitting. It began very suddenly, and aided by a strong south-west wind, soon swept through the house, which, with all its contents, was completely destroyed. All efforts to save the building proved futile and little of value was saved. The building was insured.
